Navigate Your Phone with TalkBack

Use TalkBack if you need to navigate your phone by spoken feedback. When you tap the screen, your phone vibrates and gives you an audible response so you know what you are tapping.

Note: Not all languages are supported.

Turn TalkBack On

  1. Tap home key > all apps icon > settings app icon Settings.
  2. Tap Accessibility > TalkBack.
  3. Tap the TalkBack On/Off switch.
  4. Read the TalkBack disclaimer and then tap OK. Your phone will enable Explore by touch, which provides an audible description of what you’re tapping on the screen.
  • A short tutorial explaining how to use TalkBack will begin playing after you turn on TalkBack.

Note: TalkBack works best if you turn off auto-rotate screen.

Turn Explore by Touch On or Off

Explore by touch allows HTC U11 to respond to shortcut gestures and screen touches with audible feedback.

Note: Explore by touch is enabled when you turn on TalkBack.

  1. Tap home key > all apps icon > settings app icon Settings.
  2. Tap Accessibility > TalkBack.
  3. Tap options icon > Settings.
  4. Under Touch exploration, tap the On/Off switch next to Explore by touch to turn the feature on or off.

When Explore by touch is disabled, HTC U11 will no longer respond to shortcut gestures or speak items when you touch the screen.

Use TalkBack Gestures

When TalkBack and Explore by touch are turned on, the regular touch gestures are replaced by the TalkBack gestures.

Note: Media gestures such as 3-finger swiping may not be available when TalkBack gestures are enabled.

To open an item:

  1. Drag your finger on the screen to find and select the item.
  2. Double-tap anywhere on the screen to open the item.

To move an item:

  1. Drag your finger on the screen to find the item.
  2. Double-tap anywhere on the screen, but don’t lift your finger on the second tap.
  3. Drag the item to a new spot and then lift your finger.

To scroll through a screen:

  • Use two fingers to swipe up, down, left or right.

To unlock the lock screen:

  • Use two fingers to swipe up from the bottom of the screen.

To open the notification panel:

  • Use two fingers to swipe down from the top of the screen.

Assign TalkBack Shortcuts

TalkBack has customizable gestures that you can use to open the notification panel, view recent apps, access TalkBack controls, and more.

Important: The steps below are described using the regular gestures. Use the corresponding TalkBack gestures if you already have TalkBack turned on.

  1. Tap home key > all apps icon > settings app icon Settings.
  2. Tap Accessibility > TalkBack.
  3. Tap options icon > Settings > Manage gestures.
  4. Tap any of the gestures under Shortcut gestures, and then select an action.

Use TalkBack Context Menus

TalkBack has a global context menu for controlling continuous reading and TalkBack controls and a local context menu for controlling the selected text or item on the screen.These menus can be accessed using TalkBack shortcut gestures.

  1. Turn TalkBack on.
  2. Do one of the following:
  • To open the global context menu, use one finger to swipe down and right in one continuous movement.
  • To open the local context menu, use one finger to swipe up and right in one continuous movement.

Note: If you already changed the TalkBack shortcut gestures, check your TalkBack settings for the appropriate gesture.

  1. Double-tap an item on the menu to select.

Change the TalkBack Reading Speed and Pitch

Important: The steps below are described using the regular gestures. Use the corresponding TalkBack gestures if you already have TalkBack turned on.

  1. Tap home key > all apps icon > settings app icon Settings.
  2. Tap Accessibility > Text-to-speech output.
  3. Drag the Speech rate and Pitch sliders to the right to increase or left to decrease.
  4. Tap Listen to an example to hear the speech rate and pitch you've set.

Tip: Tap Reset speech rate or Reset speech pitch to revert the settings to their default values.

Change the TalkBack Language Settings

  1. Tap home key > all apps icon > settings app icon Settings.
  2. Tap Accessibility > Text-to-speech output.
  3. Tap settings icon next to Google Text-to-speech Engine, and then do any of the following:
  • Select a different language: Tap Language.
  • Install a language: Tap Install voice data, and then tap the language. Tap downloading status icon next to the voice data you want to install. When installation is completed, press back key twice and tap Language.

Note: Not all languages are supported.
